The Education Issue: What the Failed Removal of UVA President Teresa Sullivan Means for Higher Education

Written By Unknown on Senin, 17 September 2012 | 08.11

Eric Ogden for The New York Times

Teresa Sullivan, president of the University of Virginia.

On a languorous Sunday in June, low season on the campus of the University of Virginia, Prof. Larry Sabato opened a perplexing e-mail. "My instant reaction," he said, "was that I thought we'd been hacked." The message, sent to the entire university, announced the resignation of the university's president, Teresa Sullivan, obliquely citing a "philosophical difference of opinion" with the institution's governing board. Sullivan had held the job for just two years, without any scandal, and Sabato couldn't believe she had been pushed aside with so little evident justification. "I said that if this was true," he recalled, "this was going to be a P.R. disaster of national proportions."

Sabato is accustomed to offering predictions — a prodigiously quotable political scientist, he maintains a Web site called Sabato's Crystal Ball. And his opinions carry serious weight around UVA, an institution he has been immersed in since his undergraduate days in the 1970s, when he served as president of the Student Council. Sabato called around and discovered that the school's deans had learned of the resignation just that morning at a meeting in which Helen Dragas, the real estate developer who led UVA's board, warned that the university faced an "existential threat."

The professional educators who ran UVA were well aware that public universities everywhere were enduring a crisis. State governments have been slashing funding, driving per-student spending to historic lows, forcing schools to raise tuition, while controlling costs through salary freezes and other austerity measures. Founded and designed by Thomas Jefferson and renowned as one of the country's finest state institutions, the University of Virginia is better off than most of its counterparts: it fears mediocrity, not insolvency. But along with other elite public universities, it is struggling to figure out how to continue providing a premium education with less government support.

If anyone appeared equipped to manage the situation, it was Sullivan: she had come to Virginia after excelling in administrative positions at the University of Texas and the University of Michigan. "Everybody had the same reaction," Sabato told me. "First, shock, and then a sneaking suspicion that there had to be something else." That afternoon, in the 90-degree heat, Sabato looked on as Dragas gave an outdoor news conference. She promised to replace Sullivan with "a bold, strategic, visionary leader" but refused to answer when asked for the reasons behind Sullivan's departure.

Hours later, Sabato reached Dragas by phone. She justified the board's drastic action by arguing that Virginia was falling behind competitors, like Harvard and Stanford, especially in the development of online courses, a potentially transformative innovation. The conversation was agreeable, but privately, Sabato still wasn't convinced that the move was warranted. That evening, he crossed Jefferson's magnificent central lawn to join a dispirited group on the balcony of a university official's home. Sullivan was there, along with her husband, a law professor. Everyone was dumbfounded. Sullivan said she had no warning her job was in jeopardy.

Over the course of many drinks, the mood shifted from bafflement to outrage and finally to talk of rebellion. Someone raised the question: Could the board's decision be overturned? "We went around the group," Sabato says, "and every single one of us said, 'Nah, it's a done deal.' "

On this occasion, though, Sabato's crystal ball was wrong. Over the course of the next two weeks, the slumbering college town of Charlottesville awoke in protests, as students and faculty condemned what they saw as a coup. "This moment of terror came across everyone at UVA," said one professor, who underscored the point by requesting anonymity. "If they can do it to the president, they can do it to anybody."

Conspiracy theories abounded: that Sullivan was deposed by a Republican governor, or good ol' boy alumni, or a cabal of Wall Street donors. Vandals spray-painted the six columns of the school's neoclassical Rotunda with the letters "G-R-E-E-E-D." The national news media seized onto the story, which seemed to dramatize a broader conflict between big money and public education. The conservative editorial page of The Wall Street Journal accused the protesting faculty of trying to create "an academic Green Zone separated from economic reality," while liberal publications held up Sullivan as a symbol of a beleaguered egalitarian ideal.

Chicago Teachers’ Strike Enters Second Week

Nathan Weber for The New York Times

Chicago Teachers Union delegates on Sunday. Union leaders and city officials had reached a tentative deal on Friday.

CHICAGO — The teachers' strike here interrupted classes for a second week on Monday, days after teachers' union leaders and public schools officials reached a tentative agreement that won only modest support among the union's members during a weekend meeting.

The announcement on Sunday by the Chicago Teachers Union came after nearly 800 union representatives, the House of Delegates, convened for several hours to decide whether to end a strike that has drawn national attention in the debate over teacher evaluations, job security and the length of a school day.

The decision forced 350,000 students in the nation's third-largest school system to begin another week without classes and with no strong indication of when they might resume.

Many Chicagoans had assumed school would start again on Monday, after union leaders and city officials reached the outlines of a deal on Friday, ending what had been days of long and sometimes contentious talks.

But inside the closed-door meeting of the union's House of Delegates on Sunday, opinion was split. Some delegates wanted to accept the deal and return to school immediately, while others said they needed time to digest its details, which they had not known until Sunday's meeting. Still others objected to the new terms of the contract entirely, suggesting that a resolution of this entire chapter may yet be far from reach.

"I think everybody wants to be back in the classroom, but I think everyone is nervous about a bad contract," Kevin Hough, one of the delegates, said as he left the meeting on this city's South Side, where delegates had decided in a "standing vote" to continue their strike. A clear majority, those present said, wanted to wait. "In the end I think it's wise for members to have a day to review the contract," Mr. Hough said.

The decision infuriated school system officials, who had advised parents on Friday to be ready to return their children to school on Monday, and Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who has suggested since the teachers began striking a week ago that they ought to return to the classroom even as negotiators finished the contract. Mr. Emanuel said he was now instructing city lawyers to seek a legal injunction to end the strike. He deemed the strike "illegal on two grounds," saying that it was called over issues that teachers are not legally permitted to strike about and that it endangers the health and safety of children.

"I will not stand by while the children of Chicago are played as pawns in an internal dispute within a union," Mr. Emanuel said in a statement. "This was a strike of choice and is now a delay of choice that is wrong for our children. Every day our kids are kept out of school is one more day we fail in our mission: to ensure that every child in every community has an education that matches their potential."

Beyond Chicago, the notion that the strike would not, as expected, end immediately could also prove troublesome for President Obama, who has so far stayed neutral in the fight between his former chief of staff and labor, though both are expected to play a crucial role in fund-raising and voter turnout efforts nationwide.

For some parents, the continuing crisis — and the news late Sunday that it would go on — created a crushing problem: How to juggle a second week with alternative child care. "We're spending half of our life trying to figure out what to do with the kids this week," Roger Wilen, a lawyer and parent of three, said on Sunday evening. "This is ridiculous."

Last week Mr. Wilen and his wife had tested nearly every option for their children — finding a baby sitter, working from home, using an alternative school program, even taking the children to work — and were, by this weekend, feeling tested themselves. "We need them in school," he said.

As they had a week ago when the strike began, schools officials said Sunday that they would open 147 schools with nonunion workers as a contingency plan for children with nowhere else to go. Attendance at those alternative programs had been low in recent days, as parents said they felt uncertain about sending their children to schools they did not know and supervisors they had not met.

Directions: Fill in the blanks in this article about summer rapidly coming to an end, "Under Cover of Darkness, a New Season Slips In."

Use your own words and phrases, or scroll to the end of the post to choose from a scrambled list of the words or phrases that were removed. Another option? Read, or listen to someone read, the original article first, then fill in the blanks from memory.

Autumn begins in the night.

But the sun has, _______, gotten faster. And with night settling in at dinner time and burrowing _______, it is in the hours of darkness that summer literally runs out of time.

In the cocoon of the home, in the _______ silence lately filled by the air-conditioner, the air flowing in feels, smells, tastes different — not just because it is cooler, but also because it is _______ air, hailing from a different part of the planet. Sultry summer nights are made of stiflingly hot air from Southwestern deserts simmered with emanations from the Gulf of Mexico into a thick gumbo. But now the jet stream, the ever-flowing border zone between hot and cold air masses, is _______ its tentative, give-and-take pilgrimage southward, and on cool nights, the air is fresh from the pine forests of Canada.

That feeling you feel, said Mark Wysocki, the state climatologist in the New York State Climate Office, "is the jet stream trying to go ______ for the winter."

No one ever seems _______ prepared for the change. In the evening, on the boulevards, sartorial confusion _______.

On Sunday night, with the ________ falling through the 60s, you could watch the season turn before your eyes: a young woman walking up Fifth Avenue pulled a ________ striped sweater over her white tank top. Along Central Park, couples wearing T-shirts rode by in horse-drawn carriages with red blankets ________ over their laps.

In Chelsea, a retired matzo baker and his wife, a retired money-printing-press inspector, left their apartment _______ dinner to go for a walk. She wore a short-sleeved blouse with lacy décolletage, he a short-sleeve button-down. They _______ turned around, went home and re-emerged, she in a denim _______, he in a windbreaker zipped to his throat. At 10 p.m. they sat on a bench on the High Line _______ down at the chilly-looking couples at the sidewalk tables in a restaurant called Sea.

… The ______ world appears caught between calendar and mercury as well.

Though most of the trees are still full green, dry brown leaves manage to _______ in the gutters. On the sidewalks, acorns have been crunching _______ for weeks now. At first, they seemed like just more summer trash. Now they bring to mind squirrels stocking the larder for ______.

The Choice Blog: 'Queen of Mediocrity' Prepares to Present Herself to Colleges

The Envelope, Please

student photo

Thanh-Tran Nguyen, a student at Lakeside School in Seattle, is one of eight high school seniors around the world who are blogging about their college searches.

The sun is starting to withdraw from our usually gloomy Seattle skies. No more sweating in 80-degree weather and I finally get to take a breath from my rush of summer enrichment programs.

Until August, I was the one my friends would call "spontaneous."

"Hey, tomorrow night, wanna head over to Magnuson Park and watch Monty Python?"

"Yes! I'll bring all my blankets!"

Now it's different. I've spent the last few weeks focusing on my future. That's 10 hours a day, 14 days straight. It's getting harder to keep up with who I was just a few weeks ago.

For the past two months, I've been scurrying around, going from Lakeside's college writing class to the University of Washington for its computer science introduction, narrowly missing the start of two Rainier Scholars Leadership Development retreats, and then ending up back at my school for application boot camp.

Amid all these back-to-back summer schools, I needed to be in two places at once. I'm surprised I managed to do it without any superpowers.

Looking back at just August alone, I'm shocked. I would never have a schedule so packed that I would have to cut the ends of my obligations.

But this is what it means to be a senior.

Does being a college-bound senior mean having very little time for yourself? For your family and friends?

My hobbies have been less about pleasure and more about my resume. Any conversation has the potential to cause me stress. "So, what colleges are you thinking about? Have you written anything yet? Look how far I've gone, but I'm still freaking out!" That's the new norm for anyone looking to do more than graduate from high school.

Welcome to 12th grade. Exits are to your right or left, depending on which way leads you to your first college degree.

Right now, I'm sitting in on our school's college counseling application boot camp. Imagine my shock when I arrived just a few minutes into the boot camp, only to find half of my graduating class already hunched over their laptops.

We were just a bunch of children when we started down this long road. It's a frightening to be in a room full of classmates actually focusing on getting the Common Application filled out, or making sure the proper past tense of "drink" is "drank."

I'm Thanh-Tran Nguyen. I am a self-proclaimed queen of mediocrity, whose crown weighs just as heavy as any other senior's.

But I'm excited to be back in school. This moment, this year, is the start of leadership. Now that I'm just a few months past being a junior, the world started opening up to be the fabled oyster to everyone's pearl.

Being a senior means leading the rest of the student body to a successful school year. Seniors lead the schools' teams, clubs and student governments. My first step on campus as a 12th grader is one step closer to taking lead of who I am, and where I'll go.

I am a senior on a quest for higher education, yet worried about an uncertain future. However tough the seas may be, let the winds blow beneath my sails to bring me to where no one has been before.

The Learning Network Blog: Should the Private Lives of Famous People Be Off Limits?

News broke last last week that paparazzi photographs of Kate Middleton, wife of Britain's Prince William, had been taken while she sunbathed topless at a private villa in France. The photos, which appeared in tabloids in France, Ireland and Italy, appear to have been taken with a long-lens camera. Do you think public figures should expect to be ambushed by photographers, or should they be off-limits when they aren't in public?

In the IHT Rendezvous blog post "Topless Royal Photos Expose Public's Bottomless Fascination," Harvey Morris writes:

LONDON — The European media were all aflutter on Friday as a French magazine published topless photos of Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, wife of Britain's Prince William and the future Queen of England.

… But in this case the duchess looks like a totally innocent victim, having been snapped by a paparazzo with a long-range lens while tanning during a private stay at a relative's remote French château last week.

The royal couple, presently on a high-profile official tour of Asia, were said by palace officials to be angered and saddened by Closer magazine's decision to publish the pictures, which officials said crossed a red line. The royals were also said to be consulting their French lawyers.

The latest flap underlined yet again a seemingly bottomless fascination with the British royals, not only at home but among Britain's republican neighbors.

… It also revived privacy issues that were supposed to have been resolved in the wake of the death of Princess Diana, the prince's mother, who was killed in a Paris car crash in 1997 while being pursued by paparazzi.

Students: Give us your take on the paparazzi controversy. Who is at fault here: the tabloid owners for publishing the photos, the photographers for taking them, the public for being so interested in the private lives of celebrities–or someone or something else? Is losing privacy a fair trade-off for fame? Do you think Kate Middleton is–or should be–in the same category as public figures who work in the entertainment industry? If you believe that famous people should be "off limits" in their private lives, what do you think needs to change in order for that to happen?

Students 13 and older are invited to comment below. Please use only your first name. For privacy policy reasons, we will not publish student comments that include a last name.

Teachers: We ask a new Student Opinion question each weekday, and leave most open to comment indefinitely. Here is a list of the 163 questions we asked during the 2011-12 school year.

Jadi mulai lah pada urutan paling bawah(no 15). —- SELESAI —-

    Menguji Suatu Hubungan Keluarga

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 27 Maret 2012 | 00.53

Lihatlah bagaimana proses saling menyesuaikan diri. Menguji Suatu Hubungan Keluarga
