The Envelope, Please
Leobardo Espinoza Jr., a student at Topeka High School in Kansas, is one of eight high school seniors around the world who are blogging about their college searches.
My full name is Leobardo Espinoza Jr., but everyone here calls me Leo. It's shorter to say and easier for everyone to understand. I was born in California and moved to Topeka, Kan., when I was in the sixth grade.
I absolutely love the Midwest. I haven't always had high hopes and dreams, but being in Kansas has changed my life.
There was a time when I didn't even know about college. My parents didn't graduate from high school; my father only made it to the sixth grade. They didn't know about college, so why did college matter?
When I was in the eighth grade, my district adopted a program called A.V.I.D. — or Advancement Via Individual Determination. A.V.I.D. has a simple purpose: It's a college preparatory program for first-generation college-bound students. It works by providing support for students like me who are striving to rise to the top.
A.V.I.D. has expanded my horizons and has helped facilitate my growth. Now that I'm a senior, I feel prepared, at least mentally, for the amount of work that will accompany what's supposed to be the best year of high school.
I have no doubt that this will be a thrilling roller-coaster ride, filled with ups and downs. I'm hoping that in May, I'll be exiting this ride onto the platform of the university of my choice.
As I blog about the adventure that is senior year, including my moments of joy, sadness and worry, I hope this series can give you direction on what to do (and what not to do) when your time comes. If you've already passed this point in your life, I hope your memories of high school come flashing back to you.
Stick with me and we'll experience this journey together!
